The i-doit team experiences a positive CeBIT:

It´s time for change

Duesseldorf, March 2011 – The necessity for change in Hannover, was not only apparent in a political respect, but also in respect to a change in dealing with IT resources. Users are no longer willing to ignore white areas on their infrastructure maps, they want to shape and design usage and the characteristics of their IT more actively. Parallel to this, more companies than ever are counting on open source software. They are no longer willing to first buy licences, to then customise and pay for implementation, before they are able to use their software properly and with benefits.

The many discussions held and interest generated at CeBIT showed that open source IT Service Management is being adopted in IT companies and institutions more than ever. Joachim Winkler, initiator of the free tool for IT documentation, i-doit, comments: „We have never had such a rush at our stand in the open source hall 2 at CeBIT. And never before have we had such a large number of leads. We were able to record a high number of visitors, who already use i-doit in their organisations and who are looking forward to enhancing their IT documentation as well as wanting to enter into ITSM.“

i-doit offers an excellent opportunity for a modular entry into professional ITSM solutions. The tool is maintained and upgraded continuously. That is why synetics, the Duesseldorf based company behind i-doit, introduced new functions at CeBIT, such as modules for IT security certification (ISO 27001/BSI Grundschutz), for virtualisation- and cluster-management, and for infrastructure-visualisation and -modelling. At the same time, the positioning of the configuration management database (CMDB) in the background of i-doit as an integration platform for the management of data from other open source-tools such as nagios (network management) or request trackers (ticketing), is beginning to make an impact. Today i-doit sees an increasing quantity of comprehensive ITSM solutions, available through open source. In the opinion of Winkler this progression shows two main evolutions: „Every user who is still without or with an insufficient view of their IT, is becoming increasingly aware of the need for a comprehensive documentation system. And with the numerous examples included on i-doit, they can now see that you can run IT documentation and ITSM with the free solutions easily, quickly and without any financial risks.“
