Düsseldorf, January 2012 - synetics enhances the technical maturity of its ITIL-compliant documentation solution and CMDB i-doit at CeBIT. With four new features and the launch of the i-doit Academy, the provider aims to implement IT documentation and ITSM for everyone. i-doit can be found at the Open Source Park in Hall 2, Block 58 / Booth 146.
New feature overview
1. Enhanced RT interconnection:
The existing linkage between i-doit and Request Tracker, the world's leading open source helpdesk system, was considerably enhanced as part of a customer project. The resulting connection between documentation (i-doit) and Incident Management (RT) now enables an integrated use of data for operations and helpdesk purposes. The enormous potential of this solution may phase out many existing applications.
Today, as you create a ticket in RT, you may access the i-doit service and workplace trees. As a result, issues can be directly referenced and the environment relevant details of the ticket can be directly assigned from the documentation. Conversely, tickets and their status can be referenced within i-doit providing thereby the basis for advanced problem management.
2. OTRS linkage prototype:
In consideration of its multiple applications and the extended German adoption of the open source ticketing system OTRS, i-doit presents a working prototype of the integration at the CeBIT. Interested users are invited to discuss the further shaping for this new feature with the i-doit developers.
3. IP address management as a new function in the pro-release:
To map data networks and their address spaces in the new model, i-doit provides much more than just the tools for documenting Layer2 - (e.g., VLAN) or Layer3 configurations (IPv4 and IPv6). It offers convenient overviews and processing functions for administration purposes. Thus, you can easily view, re-allocate and manage free and allocated addresses. Nevertheless, individual processing within the documented objects is still possible. Layer2 documentation was modified to support the overview, including the introduction of centralized management elements. Whether the image of enterprise-wide VLAN or the documentation of complex trunk-configurations, i-doit provides integrated network management.
4. Other highlights of the enhanced pro-version:
In addition to a "workplace-centred" group level, which supports the Client-Helpdesk especially in conjunction with the previously described RT interconnection, the long-awaited multiple record processing is implemented in the list view and mass changes are also possible.
Furthermore, the report manager presents a new design, visible at various points in the program, which can be used for dynamic view filtering. Last but not least, users can now save user-specific queries whereas the query scope has been significantly expanded.
5. The i-doit Academy:
Currently available in beta status, synetics will launch its Academy in the second quarter and provide an attractive alternative to support and workshop for many users. Regular webinars and expert sessions complement this future offer. In addition, collaboration initiatives with research institutions will be established on the basis of the i-doit Academy. This should make upcoming certifications possible. i-doit uses the free e-learning platform ILIAS, a very popular option with Universities.
This is what Joachim Winkler, synetics' managing director, has to say about the i-doit participation at the Open Source Park:
"In addition to the new product features, we would like to convey two key messages.
1. Without usable information, everything is useless. Cultivating information means making isolated data visible, linking them and thus achieving significant time savings and an easier way to work. This has been proven by i-doit at QSC, the City of Frankfurt am Main, or at Bosch Software Innovations.
2. ITSM needs more democracy. Communication, exchange, and mutual influence come off badly for IT management. Thus, the current offer of free solutions, usually specialists in the ITSM discipline, is truly extensive, professional, and available for users in an attractive licensing model. However, the ensuing opportunities to influence or (co-)create the further development of open systems are still barely used. synetics would like to change that and turn specialized individual players into orchestrated team players. This is what we call Smart ITSM."
