Case study: Teterow documents digital
Sector: Government
The customer: The township of Teterow employs 48 employees. Together with Richard Zoldan, Benjamon Brocks is responsible for IT in the township. Both supervise four servers with ten VM Ware-instances. These virtual servers support approximately 120 PCs with applications in order to keep every urban facility running effectively. Teterow is a city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in eastern Germany and has about 10,000 inhabitants.
Summary:
IT-documentation was on the to-do list for Brocks and Zoldan for a long time. And because it was considered too elaborate and expensive, nothing was ever done. But then Brocks found i-doit and installed it. Today the whole administration benefits from a new overall view.
The story:
One of the many smaller users of i-doit, is the city of Teterow in the eastern Germany state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Their IT-director Benjamin Brocks has been using the tool since the middle of 2008 for the documentation of the complete IT system and inventory. Brocks claims: "This tool is exactly tailored for this field of application. It offers useful import- and reporting-functions. It was an unfamiliar system for us in the beginning, but after becoming used to it, we realised it provided us with exactly what we needed, small, low-cost and with the potential for expansion if needed." And Richard Zoldan adds: "With i-doit we are able to adjust insurance lists with our actual inventory and if necessary, we can update or plan maintenance work." Teterow has now imported about 80 percent of its whole IT inventory into i-doit. Altogether the town runs four servers with 10 VM Ware-instances which support approximately 120 PCs, about 70 printers, circa 120 monitors, and in addition the corresponding network and telecommunication elements - altogether around 500 hardware objects. In total, Brocks and Zoldan currently administer around 2,000 hard- and software objects with i-doit.
Do you need more information about the usage of i-doit in Teterow? Please send us your questions and we will respond to you as soon as possible. If you would like to speak to Benjamin Brocks at Teterow directly, please also let us know and we will arrange an interview at the earliest convenience.

Background: The ITIL®-compliant open source solution for IT documentation, i-doit, has been on the market since late 2004. In the meantime the product has established itself in many companies. Since 2009 synetics positions i doit as base product for "Smart ITSM". For this purpose there are interfaces solutions in the areas of network monitoring (Nagios ®), the helpdesk system Request Tracker (RT), various inventory tools (hInventory, OCS), or by syslog to the logging functions.
