Vulnerability management: Using tools to uncover IT security vulnerabilities

From July 2024 to June 2025, an average of 119 new IT security vulnerabilities were discovered every day in Germany. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this was an increase of 24 percent. This is reported by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in its latest situation report for 2025. Every single IT security vulnerability can be a gateway for cyberattacks.

Therefore, vulnerability management (also known as IT vulnerability management) has become an indispensable process for companies of all kinds. An approach is needed to systematically identify, prioritize, and fix vulnerabilities. This significantly reduces the attack surface. At the same time, this is a prerequisite for complying with various regulations. These include ISO 27001, NIS-2, or the BSI IT-Grundschutz.

Find out in this article how vulnerability management is defined, how a vulnerability management process works in practice, and which tools you should rely on.

What is vulnerability management?

Vulnerability management is the continuous cycle of identifying, evaluating, prioritizing, and fixing security vulnerabilities across the entire IT landscape. Here, the spectrum ranges from servers and clients to network components and applications. As a central pillar of IT risk management, vulnerability management is crucial for maintaining information security.

The goal is to uncover and close IT security vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by attackers. In contrast to selective measures such as penetration tests, which provide a snapshot, vulnerability management is an ongoing process. This is because new vulnerabilities arise daily through new software deployments, undiscovered misconfigurations, or newly published exploits for previously secure systems.

Vulnerability management for the precise detection of IT security vulnerabilities

In addition to the current threat landscape, regulations such as NIS-2 and DORA are tightening the formal requirements for corporate security. Structured vulnerability management provides you with the technical and procedural foundation for an appropriate response. It offers tangible benefits:

  • Minimization of the attack risk: You close IT security vulnerabilities proactively, thereby reducing the attack surface.

  • Verifiable compliance: Frameworks like ISO 27001 and NIS-2 explicitly require an established vulnerability management process. This includes regular vulnerability scanning, functioning patch management, and seamless documentation.

  • Efficient resource allocation: The costs of a successful cyberattack can be very high. Preventive IT vulnerability management is a minor investment in comparison, preventing expensive downtime, data loss, and reputational damage.

  • Operational transparency: An active process ensures that your IT team always has an exact overview of critical IT security vulnerabilities and the status of their remediation.

The five phases of the vulnerability management process

An effective vulnerability management process is an iterative cycle based on established industry standards. These five phases form the backbone of the entire lifecycle:

1. Discovery (Identification)

In this phase, IT systematically scans the entire asset inventory for known and potential IT security vulnerabilities. Vulnerability management tools perform authenticated and unauthenticated scans for this purpose to examine systems. They then compare the results with leading vulnerability databases such as the NVD (National Vulnerability Database) or CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures).

2. Categorization and prioritization

Not every vulnerability poses the same risk. In the second step of the vulnerability management process, you evaluate the identified gaps. The CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) score provides a basis for this. However, for effective prioritization, you must consider other factors: actual exploitability (e.g., via EPSS – Exploit Prediction Scoring System), the criticality of the affected asset for business processes, and its accessibility from the internet.

3. Remediation (Fixing)

After prioritization, the IT team fixes the technical IT security vulnerabilities. This is mostly done through patch management but can also include configuration adjustments, the implementation of compensating controls, or the shutdown of unnecessary services. A clear assignment of responsibilities and the consistent tracking of implementation are crucial for success.

4. Reassessment (Verification)

After applying the fixes, renewed scans verify that the measures have actually closed the vulnerability and that no new IT security vulnerabilities have been created in the process. This step is essential for quality assurance in the vulnerability management process.

5. Reporting

Seamless documentation and meaningful reports are not an end in themselves. They serve as evidence for audits, enable trend analyses to measure process efficiency, and create a fact-based foundation for communication between the security team, IT operations, and management.

Criteria for vulnerability management tools

Choosing the right vulnerability management software is crucial for success. Modern vulnerability management tools are more than just scanners. They act as a central platform for the entire process.

These are the essential functions of professional tools for vulnerability management:

  • Continuous scans and asset discovery: Automated detection of all assets and continuous monitoring instead of manual, periodic scans.

  • Risk-based prioritization: Aggregation of CVSS, EPSS, and threat intelligence feeds to focus on the truly critical threats.

  • Integration into patch management systems: Direct connection to WSUS, SCCM, or other systems to accelerate remediation.

  • Compliance reporting: Predefined reports for standards such as ISO 27001, NIS-2, or PCI DSS to simplify audits.

  • CMDB integration: Linking vulnerabilities to the affected IT assets and the underlying business processes to assess business impacts.

Leading vulnerability management tools are characterized by clear actionable recommendations, extensive automation workflows, and open APIs for integration into existing IT ecosystems.

IT vulnerability management and compliance

Vulnerability management is a central requirement of the most important IT security regulations:

  • ISO 27001: In Annex A (Control A.8.8), the standard explicitly requires the "management of technical vulnerabilities". A proactive, documented, and verifiable vulnerability management process is thus a prerequisite for certification.

  • NIS-2: The EU directive obliges operators of critical infrastructures to take state-of-the-art risk management measures. Systematic IT vulnerability management is a fundamental building block here.

  • BSI IT-Grundschutz: The OPS.1.1.1 module requires the integration of all relevant resources into vulnerability management. The BSI is also driving automation in this area with standards such as CSAF 2.0.

Vulnerability management with i-doit Suite und  INDITOR®

With its ISMS solutions, the i-doit GRC Suite+, and INDITOR®, i-doit offers an integrated approach that seamlessly embeds vulnerability management into the entire information security management system. Because these tools enable:

  • Systematic recording and evaluation: Vulnerabilities are not viewed in isolation but evaluated in the context of risk catalogs such as ISO 27001.

  • Direct linking in the CMDB: IT security vulnerabilities are linked directly to the affected assets and business processes. This makes the business impact immediately apparent.

  • Traceable derivation of measures: Define concrete measures, assign them to the responsible teams, and track the implementation status centrally.

  • Holistic integration: The seamless connection with IT documentation and risk management eliminates redundant data maintenance.

Best practices for effective vulnerability management

The best vulnerability management software is only as good as the processes in which it is embedded:

Maintain a complete asset inventory

Maintain a seamless directory of all IT assets, because you can only protect what you know.

Scan at a high frequency

Ideally, check critical, exposed systems daily and internal systems at least weekly to detect vulnerabilities promptly.

Prioritize based on risk

Focus your resources on fixing vulnerabilities with a high CVSS score and known exploitability in your most critical systems.

Automate patching

Use automated processes to accelerate the response time (MTTR) and reduce manual effort.

Define clear responsibilities (RACI)

Clearly define who is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and fixing IT security vulnerabilities.

Measure success with KPIs

Use metrics such as the patch compliance rate or the number of open critical vulnerabilities to control the effectiveness of your process and continuously improve it.

Vulnerability management is the foundation of a resilient IT

Against the backdrop of the current threat landscape and requirements such as ISO 27001 or NIS-2, there is no way around a robust vulnerability management process. This not only protects you from cyberattacks. In addition, you have transparency and control over your IT infrastructure.

Vulnerability management tools are crucial for ensuring automation and efficiency. From recording to tracking measures: Let i-doit support you in anchoring IT vulnerability management as an integral part of your ISMS.
